Tucked at the far end of the serene indoor pool, the Deepaśālā Niche transforms an otherwise blank white wall into a living tableau of light, water, and tradition. Its nine tiers of hand-cut hardwood shelves are perfectly graduated—each a narrow ledge designed to cradle rows of gleaming brass lamps. As evening falls and each oil lamp is lit, a warm amber glow radiates across the backlit quartz panels, drawing the eye through the lantern’s filigree shadows and across rippling water below. Flanking the niche, clusters of decorative ceramic fish, seahorses, and starfish swim across the painted wall, reinforcing the sense that this is a sacred port where the world of the temple meets the element of water. At the niche’s apex, twin carved-teak elephant finials stand guard beneath an intricately carved arch—an homage to Kerala’s temple gopurams. The arch’s latticework filters the soft uplight concealed above, so that the tiny oil lamps become living embers in an architectural cathedral. Across the teak decking of the pool surround, these flickers dance like fireflies, reflecting in the emerald-tinted water to create a shimmering cathedral of light and form. More than a decorative accent, the Deepaśālā Niche is a ritual space: a place for evening puja, a focal point for prayer, or simply a moment of quiet wonder. Its natural materials—aged teak, polished brass, and glowing quartz—remind us of the balance between earth, water, and fire. By day, it stands as an artful sculpture; by night, it becomes a living shrine, inviting stillness, reflection, and the ancient practice of light as devotion.
Each component reflects a story of devotion, culture, and skilled hands
A sweeping carved-teak arch patterned with lotus petals and filigree. It frames the niche like a temple doorway, channeling light inward and offering an instant sense of sanctuary.
Nine hand-planed teak ledges—“lamp floors”—each precisely leveled and graduated to hold brass oil lamps. Their slight overhang and hidden supports make the lamps appear to float in mid-air.
Twin elephant head carvings—guardians of the niche—crown the arch. Detailed tusks and carved-wood eyes lend a sense of living presence and connection to Kerala’s mahout traditions.
